About "London Rays"

Watercolours are a really tricky medium to use as there is no going back if you make a mistake, but it has some fantastic qualities in capturing distance and light within a scene. To create this moody painting of the Thames, I accentuated the strong shafts of light beaming through the clouds onto the river, by revealing areas of the bright white paper underneath. Using a wet-on-wet technique, I allowed the paint to mix and move freely on the paper, giving the piece a softness which emulates the tranquility of the scene. To finish, I used pen to add some subtle details to the structures, including the Shard, which slices through the skyline with its distinct sharp edges.
